MIPS: What is My Participation Status?

Eligible providers and practices across the country have still not received a letter from CMS regarding their Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) participation, status which was set to be delivered in December 2016. According to Medicare Group Management Association (MGMA), “Without basic information about eligibility, physicians and medical groups are significantly disadvantaged from positioning themselves for success in the program.”

According to a recent article, CMS Expects to Release MIPS Participation Status by May 2017, “CMS anticipates notifying eligible clinicians about their MIPS participation status for 2017 via letter between late April through May”. This article outlines potential exemptions for providers who significantly participate in Advanced Alternative Payment Model (APM), exemptions based on clinician type, and exemptions based on volume.

Providers interested in complying with MIPS may still be unaware of their participation status, but there are still several things providers can do to prepare:
